Cecilia Fiona (b.1997) based in Copenhagen, Denmark works across sculpture, painting and performance developing an interconnected practice in which each medium extends and informs the other. Her performances embody the biomorphic forms that emerge within her paintings, while her sculptural works expand the landscapes and narratives she creates through her imagery.
Employing organic materials such as paper pulp, shells, branches, rabbit-skin glue, jute, loofah and natural pigments, Fiona explores the symbiotic relationship
between the body and the earth.
Drawing on quantum physics, microbiology, and alchemy, she creates her own mythological world where hybrid beings dissolve into imaginative ecosystems exploring themes of spirituality, transformation and ecology.
Her practice envisions speculative worlds where boundaries between human, nature and cosmos dissolve into fluid states of transformation and connection.
Fiona’s creative process is intuitive and meditative. She describes her painting sessions as akin to an archaeological excavation: “I start with a vision that feels like remembering a dream. It’s blurred at first, so I let intuition guide me until I reach the image.” Her meticulous technique involves painting with a small, thin brush, even for large strokes, resulting in detailed and complex compositions that blend figures and landscapes into one another. This approach creates a state of flow and tumult on the canvas, dissolving the boundaries between bodies and the world. Her work often explores themes of transformation, movement, and connectedness. Fiona states, “I see my works as ecosystems, where one link leads to the next, and where all beings are in constant transformation towards new stages of life and new ways of existing.” This perspective aligns with her interest in posthumanist theories, particularly Rosi Braidotti’s concept of nomadic subjectivity, which emphasizes the fluidity of identity and the interconnectedness of all life forms.
Fiona has had several solo exhibitions including at Copenhagen Contemporary (2025) and has shown her work in group shows internationally at SIXI Museum, Nanjing, China (2024), Lab Verde Residency in collaboration with National Institute of Amazonia Research, in the Amazon, Brazil (2024) and HEART Museum – Herning Museum of Contemporary Art (2025).
In 2026 she will have her first institutional solo exhibition in the UK at Towner Eastbourne and she will present her works in group shows at Bergen Kunsthall (Bergen, NK), La Casa Encendida (Madrid, ES) and Skaftfell Art Center (Seydisfjörður, IS).
The artist is represented by Andersen’s Contemporary (Copenhagen, DK) and Niru Ratnam Gallery (London, UK). In 2026 she will have her first solo exhibition at Niru Ratnam in London.
